Need a new HVAC system, an AC repair, or a furnace replaced in Chaparral? We help homeowners find licensed HVAC contractors for free.
Chaparral straddles Doña Ana and Otero counties, right at the Texas border north of El Paso.
Chaparral is an unincorporated community of about 16,500 people (2020 census) that sits in both Doña Ana and Otero counties, with El Paso just to the south. Because it is spread out and between Las Cruces and El Paso, ask contractors about trip charges and how quickly they can get to your address, especially for emergency repairs in July and August.
If you are replacing an old system or adding refrigerated air, get a load calculation so the system is sized to your home. Ask about SEER2 efficiency ratings, the warranty on equipment and labor, and whether your electrical panel can support the new unit. Heat pumps are worth asking about, since they handle both heating and cooling.
Desert dust and high summer heat are hard on equipment. Change filters every 1 to 3 months during heavy use, keep the outdoor unit clear, and schedule a tune-up before summer and before winter. If your system is older than 10 to 15 years and needs a major repair, compare the repair price to replacement before you decide.
Many Southern New Mexico homes still use evaporative (swamp) coolers. According to the New Mexico Office of the State Engineer, a typical cooler uses about one-third the energy of refrigerated air, and works best when humidity is low. At 30% relative humidity it can cool 90°F air down to about 74°F.
The trade-off is water and humid weather. The State Engineer estimates a cooler on a 1,500 sq ft home in Las Cruces uses about 12,457 gallons of water in an average year, and more with a bleed-off valve. During monsoon season, when humidity rises, coolers lose much of their punch. That is why many homeowners add or switch to refrigerated air. A local contractor can tell you whether your ductwork and electrical service can handle it.
In New Mexico, HVAC contractors are licensed by the Construction Industries Division (CID) of the Regulation and Licensing Department. Before you hire anyone, look up their license through the CID's "Verify a License" page at rld.nm.gov, and ask for proof of insurance. We only refer homeowners to licensed contractors, but it is always smart to check for yourself.
Costs depend on system size, efficiency rating, ductwork, and labor. As rough ranges from our FAQ, a standard central split AC system installed often runs about $3,500 to $8,500+, and a gas furnace about $2,500 to $6,000. Use our free HVAC cost estimator for a ballpark, then get at least two quotes from licensed contractors.
We are not an HVAC company. We are a free referral and information service. Tell us what you need, and we personally follow up, usually within 1 business day, to help connect you with a licensed local contractor. There is no cost to you and no obligation to hire anyone.
